Petr Fiala is a Prime Minister of the Czech Republic. He started his career as a historian and an academic. Since the 1980s he has participated in independent civic activities against the communist dictatorship. After November 1989 he was establishing the field of political science. He was a head of several university departments, a dean and then a rector of Masaryk University. He was also the director of the International Institute of Political Science and the Institute for Comparative Political Research. He held a number of public and professional positions. Since 2014 he leads the Civic Democratic Party, in which he became Prime Minister in 2021. His academic work specialises in comparative political science, European politics and conservative political thought.
